Coarse Fishing in Scotland - Bruce's Acre Loch at Broom Fisheries
Fish for common carp, f1 carp, barbel, mirror carp, roach, chub, perch and gudgeon on Bruce's Acre water

So called because it is beside the spot where Robert the Bruce reportedly once camped in 1306 whilst taking the Comyns strongholds in the area. From here he went on to Glasgow to confess to the murder of John III Comyn in Grey Friars church, Dumfries. Comyn was the head of one of the leading Scottish families and Robert's only rival for the throne. Robert confessed to the Bishop of Glasgow and received absolution on the condition that as King he would be suitably respectful of the church. He was inaugurated as the King of Scotland at Scone on 25th March 1306.

This coarse fishing water has 18 pegs to fish from and is home to the following species of fish:

  • Barbel - Fishing for barbel is great fun, and catching your first Broom barbel will be a memorable experience.
  • Mirror Carp - Biologically like common carp, but they have irregular scale patterns which can make them unique.
  • Common Carp - These have an even, regular scale pattern, and often grow into double figures.
  • F1 Carp - These fish are especially bred to feed all year round so carp fishing is now available in the winter too.
  • Roach - Beautiful silver fish - takes a wide range of bait. The roach is extremely popular with UK anglers.
  • Gudgeon - This small and attractive fish is quite rare in Scotland, so we are proud of their ability to survive here.
  • Chub - A very shiny fish with an incredibly large mouth.
  • Perch - Handsome striped fish with bright orange/red pelvic fins.
Bruce's Acre has a fairly even depth of around 5 feet. A proprietory ground bait coupled with a pelletised hook bait is a good way to attract the carp in here. A hook pellet, as well as meat bait or worm are good for the feisty barbel that inhabit the marginal growth. Maggots from our live bait store are excellent for enticing the silver fish into your swim.
